BIG TIME CERAMICS

BIG TIME CERAMICS – When it comes to ceramic art, New Brunswick High School senior Gizelle Fernandez Vasquez is something of a star. One of her works was recently accepted into the National K12 Ceramic Exhibition. This prestigious event – which will be attended by thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world – will be held in Richmond, VA, from March 20-24, during the 58th annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.
A total of 1169 pieces of ceramic art were submitted for inclusion in the exhibition. Fernandez Vasquez’s work was among only 150 that were selected.

New Brunswick Public Schools appoints new business administrator

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (Jan. 24, 2024) – New Brunswick Public Schools has appointed Dorenia Villalona as its new business administrator. Villalona, who has worked within the district since 2003 – most recently in the role of assistant business administrator of operations – will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Richard Jannarone.
Villalona’s appointment was approved during last night’s board of education meeting. She will officially assume her new responsibilities on February 1, 2024.
A graduate of Rutgers University, with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s in public administration, Villalona is a 2002 graduate of New Brunswick High School.

Two New Brunswick Public Schools students awarded full, academic scholarships to leading academic institutions through QuestBridge “National College Match” program

Elizabeth Escobar Gomez to attend Duke UniversityNEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (Jan. 22, 2024) – New Brunswick High School senior Daisy Sanchez Garcia and
New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School senior Elizabeth Escobar Gomez each have earned full, academic scholarships to prestigious universities through the QuestBridge “National College Match” program. Both students will begin their studies in the fall of 2024; Garcia will be a freshman at Dartmouth College, while Gomez will be a member of Duke University’s class of 2028.Garcia and Gomez are among 2,242 students who, during 2023, received full, four-year scholarships through the 50 universities and colleges that participate in QuestBridge’s annual program. Based in Palo Alto, CA, QuestBridge connects high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds with some of the finest schools in the U.S. The scholarships the two New Brunswick students qualified for cover tuition, room, and board.
Garcia plans to study computer science at Dartmouth, while Gomez will major in biology and neuroscience at Duke.
'I applied to the QuestBridge program because it provides a chance for first-generation students with a high academic profile to attend college,” Garcia says. “I was very excited to hear about my match with Dartmouth College. It appeals to me for so many reasons – small class sizes, academic opportunities, and overall reputation. I look forward to being a part of the class of 2028 this fall.”
Regarding QuestBridge, Gomez added: “This scholarship is a great gift – it makes me feel the hard work and sacrifices paid off. And I’m so excited my parents and I won't have a financial burden; it’s a weight lifted off my shoulders. I’m proud to have been accepted to such a prestigious university.”
Founded in 1769, Dartmouth University in Hanover, NH is a member of the prestigious Ivy League of nine academically outstanding schools. Duke University in Durham, NC is recognized as one of the very finest private, research universities in the U.S.
“Elizabeth and Daisy are among our district’s most accomplished, hardest working seniors and I’m delighted they were presented with these opportunities through QuestBridge,” says Dr. Aubrey Johnson, superintendent of New Brunswick Public Schools. “I’m confident they’ll excel as university students and I’m looking forward to hearing about their accomplishments at Duke and Dartmouth.”
