• Welcome to the Science Department! 

    Mission: To create science learning experiences that allow students to "figure it out" or "solve a problem" to become critical thinkers and problem solvers through science and engineering practices. A focus on scientifically literacy is imperative to developing learners that make informed decisions about the world around them, critically analyze evidence for reliability and quality, and communicate ideas about science to others. Students will engage as learners that innovate solutions to complex problems beginning with their community and working towards using science to create solution-oriented change globally. We aim to provide multiple opportunities for students along with their families to engage in STEM activities that allow for informal learning, conversation, and collaborative learning through discovery.

    Department Goals:

    K-2 Goal for 2019-2020 School year: 

    Students should be engaged in science and engineering practices in their classroom. Interdisciplinary connections are made explicit for students- science can be used as a context to boost literacy and support the application of math practices.

    3-5 Goal for 2019-2020 School year: 

    Students should be engaged in science and engineering practices in their classroom. Begin to incorporate “3-D” learning by using practices to learn or apply the disciplinary core ideas through the lense of crosscutting concepts. Students should DO the heavy lifting, with support and scaffolds from the teacher facilitating the learning (through questioning strategies- assessing and advancing q’s, peer to peer discussion, labs, graphic organizers, readings, etc.).

    6-12 Goal for 2019-2020 School year: 

    Instruction and assessments should be 3 dimensional- students are engaged in science and engineering practices to learn or apply disciplinary core ideas through the lens of the cross-cutting concepts. Integrate cross-cutting concept questions as formative assessments in a more explicit way. Instruction should be designed around explaining a phenomena or solving a problem (real world).
