Lincoln Annex School first opened its doors to 620 third through seventh grade students in September of 2016 in the newly refurbished, former Saint Peter’s School at 165 Somerset Street, New Brunswick, New Jersey. As the newest member of the New Brunswick Public Schools community, our staff of 60 certified professionals is striving to reflect our District Mission by “preparing, inspiring, and empowering lifelong learners and leaders.” At Lincoln Annex School we strive to fulfill our District Vision by “inspiring students to become engaged in their own learning… and to develop their creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills.” We are the home of the Lincoln Annex School Lions, older brothers and sisters to the Lion Cubs of Lincoln Elementary School.Lincoln Annex School is a proud recipient of New Jersey's Future Ready Schools Bronze recognition. This recognition is based on both school technology and innovative instructional practices. We strive to be forward thinking in our approach to education and promote critical thinking and reasoning for all of our students
Students at Lincoln Annex School are training to be 21st Century Learners through interaction with strong, research-based curricula that are aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, use of technology, and opportunities to solve real-world problems through inquiry-based learning. Teachers at Lincoln Annex School work to develop effective teaching practices to ensure that the varied and unique gifts, modalities and intelligences of Lincoln Annex students are addressed. The school's collegial and dedicated staff members engage students with current best practices including social-emotional learning, guided reading, readers' and writers' workshop, real-world math and inquiry-based problem solving, and science and social studies applications. A partnership among the school, its families and the Lincoln Annex community-at-large also contributes to the school's success. We are located directly across the street from Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, and we are infusing our curricula with learning activities designed to strengthen our students’ awareness of health and wellness issues. We are also developing partnerships with community agencies such as the Civic League of Greater New Brunswick, George Street Theater, and Rutgers University, just to name a few.
At Lincoln Annex School, we place an emphasis on literacy and helping all students develop a love for reading and writing through a balanced literacy approach. Teachers use various diagnostic tools, including baseline and culminating tasks within each reading and writing unit of study, to regularly assess students and ultimately individualize instruction. Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop models can be found in our classrooms, and students work consistently to analyze their reading and strengthen their writing with strategic use of text evidence. Students also benefit from our implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI). This approach identifies at-risk students as early as possible and provides us with an array of tools and options to ensure student success. In addition, we offer an Extended School Day Program for our 3rd and 4th grade students, designed to further strengthen their comprehension skills and reading fluency. Lincoln Annex School has also partnered with the Civic League of Greater New Brunswick to host an after school program available to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students that includes enrichment activities across all curricula, as well as building leadership skills.
The district's mathematics programs emphasize the development of students' understanding of math concepts and problem-solving skills through day-to-day experiences that are meaningful. Students are encouraged to use multiple methods to foster proficiency and accommodate different learning styles. Students approach math problems through collaborative, inquiry-based learning experiences. The goal of this approach is to build powerful mathematical thinkers and capable problem solvers.
Technology supports a collaborative, interactive learning environment. Students regularly utilize technology throughout the day in all disciplines to enhance learning, conduct research, and demonstrate understanding. Lincoln Annex School has over 600 Chromebooks for student use and every certificated teacher has a dedicated laptop to assist in technology integration. To support the most current instructional strategies, 19 Interactive LCD projectors and 22 Standard LCD projectors are installed throughout our classrooms. Online resources for literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and health are utilized throughout the curriculum areas within all grade levels. In addition our middle school students will receive training in Graphic Design using iMacs in our new computer lab.
6th, 7th and 8th grade students who attend Lincoln Annex School are invited to participate in Fall, Winter, and Spring athletics alongside the students who attend the New Brunswick Middle School on Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. In addition, our fourth grade students attend an aquatics program at the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Wellness Center. Lincoln Annex students of all ages receive comprehensive physical education training in our new, state of the art gymnasium.
