Basic Skills Intervention

  • The goal of the Academic Intervention Program is to provide diagnostic, prescriptive and individualized instruction in a small group setting.  Academic Intervention Instruction is a structured, supplemental instruction and intervention program in grades 1 - 2. The program employs a pull-out (outside the classroom) model using a small group instructional setting depending on the individual student's needs. The program serves to identify students in need of additional support to move them towards grade level proficiency. Ongoing data collection will provide rationale for services.

    Students will be identified using district created rubrics associated with the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System and the grade-level district Beginning of the Year Math Assessment.  Each school will establish and Academic Intervention team to review student data. Each school program will be developed based on the needs of the students. Groupings will be based on student learning needs rather than homeroom.  Students placements will be evaluated every 12-20 weeks on the district cycle.



  • The purpose of the Academic Intervention Program is to strengthen the development of academic skills in early literacy and mathematics.   The Academic Intervention Program is taught by Basic Skills Teachers. As an accountability measure of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the Academic Intervention Program in New Brunswick will  assist students to succeed according to grade level expectations and to become proficient on the standardized assessments mandated by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE).  

    • Strengthen the reasoning and early literacy skills of students in grades 1-2 who have unfinished learning
    • Provide additional support for striving learners who need to access specific skills and strategies designed to achieve grade level standards
    • Recognize individual learning differences and strive to build students’ competence and enhance self esteem
    • Provide access to, and equity in, tasks which are rich in academic rigor for all students in grades 1 -2
    • All teachers providing Academic Intervention  instruction will receive specific Professional Development in SOAR and/or LLI as appropriate for their assignment
